It was never about the water
The question has always been is the glass half full of water or half empty?
The lesson was that an optimist sees the glass half full and a pessimist half empty. Then someone said that the glass was actually always full because no matter how much water is in the glass the rest of the glass was full of air.
Clever.
The thing is that it was never about the water.
This philosophical question of half full or half empty was about how you perceive things in your life; when something happens you had a choice, to look at the positive or the negative. There”s certainly nothing wrong with this notion and for years we’ve been told that we always need to focus on the glass (situation) as being half full (positive) so that we can live happily, enjoy our life more, in short; live a better life.
While this is good advice it misses the point. It was never about the water. It’s about the glass.
That beautiful crystal, smudge free, ornately crafted glass. That thing we call life. While we’re all worried about whether it’s half full or half empty we forget to focus on the most important thing of all. We have a beautiful glass (life). We’re alive, we’re breathing, we have this amazing opportunity every day to utilize our glass however we want, but it’s always been about the glass, not the water.
You have a beautiful glass. It’s you. It’s your life. You are amazing just as you are. You have thoughts and opinions, talents and abilities that no one else has quite like you do. You have purpose and passions and ambitions that are uniquely yours. Stop worrying about how much water is in the glass and start living your life to the fullest. Start experiencing everything, good and bad, with abandon. Your glass is amazing, hand crafted, custom made just for you. It can hold whatever you want it to, it’s up to you to fill it as little or as much as you want and to drink in this incredible ride we call living for as long as you can.
If we take care of our lives, making the most out of this incredible experience we have; jumping at opportunities when they arise, and living life to the fullest, the water in the glass will take care of itself.
