Wonderment
As an infant, on your first birthday, you ripped the paper open and your wonderment and excitement about what was in the box was so much more amazing to you that you played in the box more than you did with the toy.
As a toddler you shredded the wrapping and tore at the box excited to see what was inside. You simply couldn’t wait for the surprise.
As you grew, it became more about the thing and less about the imagining and anticipation of what was under the wrapping. You found yourself often disappointed because you had already decided what you wanted the present to be and when it wasn’t, nothing else mattered.
Then, reality set in. You’re an adult now. There’s no more imagination. No more excitement. You no longer rip the package apart in anticipation. Rather, you carefully open it at the seams because, after all, you can re-use this paper. And the box? Well, that can be reused too so let’s be careful with that and set it aside for safekeeping. Oh, and as for the present…. yes, that’s nice, now let’s go back to what we were doing, you have work to do.
When was it exactly that you lost your wonderment? Your imagination for the possibilities of what was before you? When did you decide that you already know what’s in this box of life?
When was the last time you ripped open the wrapping paper out of excitement and tore at the tape because you just couldn’t WAIT to see what’s inside?
Maybe it’s time to start waking up with wonderment again?

After her husband was given a job for a year in Italy, Andrea and the rest of their family joined him on the adventure; and what an adventure it was. Often trying to do the simplest of things, her story captures the hilarity of an American in Italy trying to navigate a country that seems as foreign as should be familiar.
